I'm not sure what you mean.  Do you mean you want a plugin to be able to modify the user's current filter and add/remove columns?

I'd like the user to be able to select from a number of pre-determined columns that they'd like to appear on a report type table generated in my plugin.

i.e. I support columns name  A through Z but the user only wants to see A - C, D, F, and M but not the others.

Does this makes sense?

I think I know what you mean.  We don't expose an API to do this for anything except the filters and the grid in the list page.

Feature request then ;-)
